PERUVIAN DARKNESS POWDER

Xavier Lewis gets a letter from a relative of theirs who has a mean sense of humor. When they open the envelope in the halls of the lodge, Peruvian Darkness Powder bursts out, blanketing the area in magical darkness! The inconvenience lasts an hour, and Lumos and Incendio don’t do anything to help.

Magdalen Gillis walks in with their friend, and grabs their friend’s hand so they don’t lose them… only to walk out and find they’re actually holding hands with Riley Stamper. How embarrassing.

Wyatt Winslow trips and crashes into Saira Raza in the darkness, and ends up banging their face against a wall and getting a bloody nose!

Joanna May is startled by Robin Youngblood who was creeping around in the darkness “singing” the Jaws theme.

HOW THIS WORKS

• If you're looking to get hurt and go completely insane, have I got the place for you. New York's Hottest New Club is The Lodge But It's Dark For An Hour. Located in a giant magical log cabin in the woods of northern Utah, this place has everything: nosebleeds, darkness, gals being pals, 15-and-16-year-olds who haven't slept since last Thursday, my son and an intense feeling of dread for what the future holds. So come on down and grope around in the pitch while also possibly inhaling the same magical powder that's causing this predicament.


• Lumos and Incendio do not work.


• The fun begins roundabout lunchtime.


• Have fun. Watch out for snakes.

Xavier Opens A Letter (Open)

The return address is for Ilvermorny, in his little sister's bubbly script, but her name's not on it. Xavier's had the letter since breakfast, but stops before lunch to lean against a wall and open it. There's a cute cat sticker over the seal of the envelope, and Zav takes care to peel it back without damaging it.

Not that it matters, ultimately.

Because, as Nisha would say, nothing matters, anyway, so it's cool.

Also, the other thing that's probably important to it not mattering is the fact that as soon as Xavier lifts the flap on the envelope, the contents excite and a plume of darkness explodes into the air.

"Holy shit." Xavier holds the envelope at arms length, coughing. Within seconds, all light is gone. Just like home. Xavier thinks.

Xavier Opens A Letter, Isaiah disapproves

Isaiah usually waits to go into lunch until he spots at least one of his friends, because if he does not sit down with them there is a chance he'll have to sit with strangers, and oh hell no. Today he spots Zav first outside of the cafeteria and heads over with...well, not a spring in his step, because he isn't one of the Ribbonfins who tends to spring, but happily, at least.

Which means that he is watching as his roommate opens the envelope and the darkness blooms out of it. Which. Holy shit.

Maybe he should have opted to sit alone today.

"What did you do?" he asks the air in front of him without moving any further, because there is a wall in that direction as well as a buddy and he doesn't fancy injuring himself today.

Robin Sings a Song (Open to Jo + Multiples)

"Daaaa-na." Robin circles through the darkness, listening for footsteps and breathing and the occasional crashing and slamming into walls to determine where people were.

"Daaaaa-na." He creeps closer to a pair who clinging together, circling around them as best he could in the blackness before drifting on. "Da-na da-na DA-NA DA-NA DA-NA DA-NA DUMMMMM." He grabs the arm of the nearest person, practically screaming in their face.

And then he's gone again, back to roaming the high seas of darkness powder.

Takeru Is Going to Need a Bigger Boat

Takeru really just wants to stuff his face. He's so hungry and it's lunch and now he has to waste valuable eating time groping down the hall because Xavier "Everything that's Wrong with Burning Man" Lewis had to go and cause a scene. At least the laughing draught was funny, Xavier.

Takeru panics and freezes when he hears the jaws music approach him from behind. Now he'll never get a sandwich. :(

Ssssssssylla + Open

She wonders why she makes such plans at a place like Gooseberry, but Mummy has told her that improvisation and being able to think on her feet will prove most useful, regardless of what Daddy says about time organisation and such. When she finds herself in complete darkness and faced with the task of making her way towards the library, groping about the walls with her wand in hand proves most ineffective. After it has taken her the better part of an hour to navigate to her locker, she gets an idea. It may not be the most practical idea, but perhaps her vision can overcome the obstacle.

Sylla steadies herself and transforms into the white cobra, and blinks around. Bloody hell, it's still dark. It comes out as more of a soft hiss.

Perhaps she actually has to be near someone and their body heat, she thinks.

Slithering against the wall will at least keep her out of harm's way long enough, or allow her to find her way to the stairs, at any rate.

Ssssssssylla + Casssssssper

While the sudden and impenetrable darkness is irritating to Casper, it had given him an excuse to slip out of a potentially awkward conversation with Nia. After all, as a prefect, he's got certain obligations in situations like these and he fully intends to minimize the chaos as well as he can. After some time spent convincing a gaggle of near-panicking freshmen to calm down and stay put for now, he moves carefully through the dark, trying to find a wall so he can get his bearings again. But then he hears a sound and stops in his tracks. Because something nearby is hissing and, in that faint sound, he can hear words. He doesn't catch them all, but he's certain that he hears dark.

Well, fuck. Of all the days for a snake to get into the Lodge. And, with its senses as stunted as theirs because of the magical darkness, it's probably on edge too. He takes a careful step in the direction of the voice. Then another. Crushing the creature's tail under his boot will not help.

After a moment he speaks in a low voice, allowing his words to slip effortlessly into the rasping hiss of Parseltongue, "Don't panic. Nothing here wants to harm you." Then he sighs. Explaining magic to snakes is...a waste of time. "The darkness will pass if you wait." A pause. "Or you can come with me."

The Legend Continues (Open, Again)

Playing around in pitch darkness is cool and all, but it's not really how you want to spend an entire hour. So, with effort, Xavier makes his way outside. Down the stairs. Into the grass. He plops down, cross-legged, and peeks into the trapped envelope, because Peruvian Darkness Powder wasn't the only thing inside.

Xavier pulls out a stack of bubble letters, all sooty and black. The kind a teacher might use to decorate third grade a classroom. Xavier lays them out in order in the grass in front of him:

He stares, baffled and blinking, then leans forward, resting his chin in the palm of his right hand, while reaching out to move letters around with his left.

Xavier & Ravi

There's no such thing as a slow day with Ravi's schedule, and less so when final exams are in a matter of weeks. Still, man cannot survive on the library alone, and also man should probably not try to blunder through inky blackness while carrying far too many books. Ravi is headed back to the cabin, with an ambitious stack of study materials in his arms, when he notices Xavier sitting on the grass.

"Zav?" Ravi slows down as he comes close enough to see what Xavier's fussing with. "Planning for a party?"

Jade's Dead Now (after the Darkening)

As the darkness clears somewhere on the second floor, there is a sole figure staggering in the false twilight. Face drawn and pale, she holds on to the wall to support her probably shattered bones. Her tie is askew. Her hair is a mess. She's seen the other side, and now it's time to go back there. She can't go on any farther and slides down the wall, coming to her final rest conveniently to one side of the hallway so no one steps on her.

When the lodge finally welcomes the sun again, Jade Otterwell's lifeless form is illuminated, sprawled out artfully.
One eye intermittently twitches open to see if anyone is paying attention. But she's dead.

Jade's Dead Now (after the Darkening)

Lucas observes Jade like a museumgoer considers a painting. Something's missing. He darts off, as fast as Lucas can dart, and comes back a few minutes later with a bouquet of three white lilies. Where did he get them? Azurcrest secret.

He steps up to Jade's totally lifeless corpse and wordlessly lays the flowers on her, then steps back and bows his head solomnly.
