PATRONUS STUDY SESSION

At the request of Olivia Sanchez, over the next two weeks, Ms. Lilywhite will be running open sessions helping students to cast the Patronus charm. The cafeteria is cleared for an hour every weekday after dinner, and any student is welcome to drop in to learn. As senior DADA students, Casper Kim and Mackenzie Prince are on hand to assist Ms. Lilywhite in guiding the lessons.

HOW THIS WORKS

• Lessons take place after dinner for an hour every week day, except Wednesdays for D&F. Students are not required to attend every session. Because these sessions take place over 2 weeks, if your character is successful you can choose when they finally cast the charm.


• If your character attends these sessions or takes DADA, they will at least learn what their patronus will be and will get a partial formation. The mods will roll to see if your character can cast a successful full-bodied patronus.


• Occlumency students are presumed to already be well-versed with this spell, as it requires emotional control and self-awareness, which are invaluable skills in Occlumency, especially if you plan on becoming an Auror. Unless you choose otherwise, all Occlumency students automatically succeed, or can already cast the charm.

  Occlumency students: Automatic success.
  Seniors in DADA: 75% success.
  Seniors not in DADA: 50% success.
  Juniors in DADA: 65% success.
  Juniors not in DADA: 40% success.
  Sophomores in DADA: 55% success.
  Sophomores not in DADA: 30% success.



• If your character has been in Duelling & Fencing since at least last month (i.e. they're currently on the roster, you may not just sign up your character for D&F today to get the bonus), they'll earn a 10% bonus to their roll.


• You can check if your character failed or succeeded last year by looking at this post.


• If your character fails, you may ask for a reroll in the dropbox after waiting one week, but you must also link to a conversation or scene with evidence they sought tutoring from a DADA Student in their year or above, or an Occlumency student.
  • They'll gain +15% to their roll if they seek tutoring from Casper or Mackenzie, who received instructions from Ms. Lilywhite on techniques to help others master this complex charm.


• You may not claim your character can already cast a patronus unless they succeeded during last year's event or are in Occlumency. This applies to new characters as well as returning ones.

Why?: According to this one website I found, otters symbolize joy! Energy! Agility! Friendship! Playfulness!! ENERGY!!! Also, have you ever seen a picture of otters holding hands so they don't drift apart?? That feeling you get when you see that picture is what it's like living in Jeffy Key's head.
Their happy memory: Honestly, there is no end to happy memories when you're Jeffy Key. There are Quidditch games! There's Christmas!! There's hanging up their BUTT BANNER with his chickabros!!! The one that works the best for him is actually waking up in his cabin at the end of last year and seeing all his friends and hugging and still hugging everyone as they're ushered down to the lodge.
Their attempt: Jeffy definitely brandishes his wand too much when he does difficult spells, because he thinks that helps. Hopefully he doesn't hit anyone in the head.

Patronus Form: Scottish Fold Cat
Why?: First of all Lucas' obvious destiny is as an old cat lady. Or just as a cat. He's skittish and introverted but protective of his loved ones. Cats are associated with darkness and magic, and with Lucas being both a pastel goth and nearly inept at anything not magic-related, it's a pretty good fit. Scottish Fold in particular because they always look sad and frightened.
Their happy memory: Sprawled out on the rubber playground mats by a swing set in Canarsie at 1AM, talking about nonsense with Bash.
Their attempt: When working with charms, Lucas possesses a confidence he normally lacks. He seems pretty sure of himself and his ability to cast this.

Patronus Form: A Rosella parrot
Why?: People love Rosella parrots because they're small, colourful, playful, sociable birds that absolutely thrive on attention. They're possess the ability to sing back just about any tune you play for them. (They're not... smart, per se, but they are incredible mimics!) Which is super cute for like, ten minutes, until you realise that they are very, very loud. Rosella parrots become bored extremely easily, and they should never be left unsupervised for long periods, because without a cool new toy to occupy their attention, they have a tendency to bite at fingers, steal small items, and even start fires.
Their happy memory: She thinks of a totally random late night spent hanging out with her friends, messing around on toy instruments and generally way too loud for the hour. She choses this memory because it happened pretty recently, and like, she can't remember anything that happened > 6 months ago.
Their attempt: Ya girl Marie doesn't have too much trouble thinking up happy memories, but they're all things like "one time I bought one bag of Smarties and the vending machine gave me THREE!" so... it's possible they're not of the right... caliber. Whatever!!!
Are they in DADA, Occlumency or D&F?: Hahahaha, oh no. She's a drop in. This is probably her second attempt ever. If she manages to cast this patronus, it'll be PURE LUCK.

MICAH!!!

Year: JUNIOR JAY
Patronus Form: Stingray
Why?: I'm going to copy/paste from last year sorry!!!! Stingrays are intelligent and curious, social but independent (many species group together in schools but stingrays don't pair bond). Micah's personality is very flamboyant, which is a contrast to the way rays camouflage themselves on the ocean floor, but that might just be a hint to how much Micah hides his true thoughts and feelings behind loud jokes and obnoxious behaviour.
Their happy memory: Well, Micah had been kind of hoping it'd be his first victory as a Seeker buuuuut that's not on the table. It's difficult to hunt down one purely happy memory—his happiest moments this summer are coloured by the breakup in September, and even the most exhilarating rides on his motorcycle carry the memory of loss with them. He gets the closest when reliving seeing his friends again on Sept 1: his roommates, the girls in their counterpart dorm, Hazel and Ana and Cole and Ari and... Calvin, surprising him on the bus.
Their attempt: He failed at this last year because he wasn't taking it too seriously. Micah has incentive now, and does his best to buckle down and listen whenever Lilywhite is speaking. Micah's "best" still involves him occasionally running off to whisper with his friends or ooh and ahh over their cute Patronuses.

Name: Nisha Gretchen Lewis
Year: Sophomore
Patronus Form: I know her app says blackbuck antelope but I am changing it to Slow Loris!!!
Why?: Nisha and slow lorises have a lot in common. They are both small, venomous primates. They both have gigantic, sad brown eyes. They both like to climb things and people. They both spend most of their waking hours foraging for food. But also, fuckin get this, apparently slow lorises are symbolically associated with having a confused relationship with good and evil, among other things that are very Lewis-y responses to fear and stress. So, if Nisha ever has to fight a dementor, it's going to get hugged to death by a tiny monkey and I don't mean her.
Their happy memory: After last year's Ilvermorny/GB game, getting scooped up and danced around by her brother, who called her a prodigy.
Their attempt: Nisha is here to have FUN and STUFF!! And isn't properly PREPARED to deal with the emotions around her HAPPY MEMORY. This is WEIRD.

Patronus Form: Hummingbird.
Why?: Small, sugar-loving, flighty and kind of fighty, that's just Riley. Hummingbirds burn a lot of energy because they're constantly moving, so they have to eat a lot, and that just sounds like Riley's reason for living tbh.
Their happy memory: That one time glitter fell on her at LARP while she was wearing fairy wings and her life felt complete.
Their attempt: Why the fuck is she even here

Kurt Wolfhart

Name: Kurt wolfhart
Year: Senior
Patronus Form: A Granian winged horse. Those especially familiar with Gooseberry's stables may be able to pick out the minutiae that mark it as the image of (you guessed it!) Lacey, Kurt's favourite horse.
Why?: Just typing "..." is really tempting. Granians—and Lacey in particular—represent Kurt's personal growth and his capacity to decide on his own path. Assisting Mr. Covington in the stables helped Kurt understand and become more comfortable with who he wants to be and he never feels so free as he does when he's on horseback (or horse-adjacent). Horses are his favourite animals and Lacey is his happy place. He's been the constant companion of this tall and stubborn strong-willed mare, having spent countless hours hanging out around her, practising his spellwork, memorizing his lines, and occasionally working through challenging personal problems.
Their happy memory: A cumulation of every time he's come back to Gooseberry after a break since freshman year Christmas. It's a delightful montage of getting off the bus, walking into his cabin, opening the auditorium doors, and coming up on the stables through the trees. The strongest are the times he's come back in the last year and ever scene is full of his friends.
Their attempt: It takes him some time to get a hang of it but thinking of his happy memories helps him calm his nerves (wow! weird!!). He's improving at nonverbal magic but I thiiink he has to cast it with words before he's able to cast it without? So I'm not sure if that's entirely relevant. He didn't succeed last year.

Evangeline Bagman

Year: Junior
Patronus Form: Iberian Lynx
Why?: Iberian Lynx's symbolize a lack of compromise. They travel far and settle rarely, and symbolize an inner strength, but are also known as the keeper of secrets.
Their happy memory: Eve's happy memory is a christmas she shared with her parents and her extended family. She was around the age of eight. It was before she truly knew how the world viewed the disconnect between muggles and worlds, before she new about Voldemort and the wars, before she knew about the reputation the name Bagman held, but it is also the last christmas she remembers her full family sharing completely together. It's not special, but it inspires a deep emotion that she can't articulate.
Their attempt: She wasn't here last year, but this isn't the first time she's attempted this charm, and it still proves difficult for her.

Solomon Webb

Year: junior
Patronus Form: A giant Brown Bear
Why?: For Solomon, the bear represents a lot. It represents the unity he feels in his house, on his team, but the size of it represents how massively he wishes he could protect everybody. But it also represents the strength to go inside of yourself to find answers.
Their happy memory: Last year, he thought about joining the quidditch team as his happy memory. This year, he focuses on the summer he spent with Sam as his happy memory.
Their attempt: This is the hardest charm he's ever tried to cast in his life.

Olivia Sanchez

Name: Olivia Sanchez
Year: Senior
Patronus Form: American Mastodon
Why?: They symbolize ancient wisdom, power of feminine, strength, health, longevity and good fortune. But they also encompass intelligence, affection and a strong sense of self and community. Which incorporates a lot of Olivia's internal strengths, she is a strong, concrete form of feminine power and she's extremely sure of herself. But American Mastodans were also shorter and more muscled than Mammoths, despite the similar appearance.
Their happy memory: Last year a lot of her memories revolved around Avery, and this year, they basically do too. But her happiest memory this year is finding Avery, at the end of the clusterfuck that was last year. She's never experienced joy and crushing relief like she did in that moment.
Their attempt: She failed last year, and she's not entirely sure she's going to be any better this year, but she wanted this workshop because she believes this is a very important charm to know, so she's determined to do better this year.

Patronus Form: A carrion crow
Why?: Carrion crows are one of the cleverest birds, with excellent memories, an extensive vocabulary, and the ability to use rudimentary tools. While they tend to be very, very wary in new situations, carrion crows are pretty impossible to intimidate, and will stare down eagles, apparently without fear. Despite this, they possess a notable distrust of people (their main predators)... although they do like STEALING from people once they've figured out the best way to do it. Carrion crows are solitary animals that prefer to live in pairs, although they may travel as a group (a murder!). They are omnivores, mostly scavengers; it is a myth that they kill baby lambs for fun. :( They do steal eggs, though, and also... food from the mouths of other baby birds, because they're easy targets? Asshole, asshole birdies. But hey, ya gotta do what you gotta do to survive.
Their happy memory: Meeting Todd and realising that the world had better things to offer.
Their attempt: This time last year, Cash had absolutely no interest in DADA, but the events of the endgame convinced him that having some rudimentary skills was valuable, so this is his independent study.

Calvin

Year: Junior
Patronus Form: Green moray eel
Why?: Moray eels symbolize shape shifting, adaptability, wisdom, inspiration, watching unseen, ability to overcome great obstacles, change, travel, and endurance. Morays have a reputation for being cruel and ill-tempered, but in reality they're reclusive and shy, and would rather flee than fight. They only attack humans out of self-defense... or confusion, because they have poor eyesight. They're pretty harmless to humans and can actually be friendly with divers. However, they're still formidable predators with a powerful bite. Although solitary, Morays often cooperatively hunt with fish of other species.
Their happy memory: Memories of his return to Gooseberry are a little to complicated, as are most happy moments shared with his friends. Calvin usually has more going on in his head that prevents him from being actually elated. He ends up settling on Dimi's arrival at Gooseberry last year.
Their attempt: Because he already learned to cast a patronus successfully last year, Calvin is cool and confident during this exercise. He does have a moment where it doesn't come to him quite as easily as he hoped, though, because pinning down happy enough memories is always difficult for him.

Name: Ferdinand Ayers
Year: Senior
Patronus Form: Hedgehog
Why?: Hedgehogs look very sweet and innocent. But they know exactly when to ball up and produce scary-looking spikes. They apparently symbolize, in part, curiosity, independence, and the ability to work through problems confidently. Hedgehogs always seem to land on their feet. Like cats. And like Ferdie.
Their happy memory: This...is where the challenge comes in.( Ferdie is my least happy child and when did that happen!?!) But he tries a small montage of being at work this summer and not coming home until the dead of night.
Their attempt: He’s been practicing this for a little while, and promised Rosy he would try more, so. He doesn’t really ha s supreme confidence here.

Dinah Danger

Name: Dinah Dixon
Year: Sophomore
Patronus Form: Dachshund.
Why?: Dachshunds are loud, stubborn little shits. They look cute and goofy, but they're hunting dogs who were bred to hunt badgers, so they've got some bite and less fear than would be advisable considering their size. Dinah would also dive down a badger hole if you dared her to, basically.
Their happy memory: The first time she went SCUBA DIVING with JUST her parents and saw a Cadborosaur baby. It was so ugly!! And so CUTE!!!
Their attempt: She doesn't have the slightest clue what she's doing.

Archie

Name: Archie Rose
Year: Sophomore
Patronus Form: Orca
Why?: Orca symbolize family, romance, longevity, harmony, travel, community and protection. They're highly intelligent, social and playful animals with a lot of cultural baggage surrounding their captivity. While known for plenty of positive things, orca can also engage in "casual cruelty", such as "playing" with their (live) food, drowning other whales by holding them underwater, working in tandem to knock prey off ice blocks, etc. They're determined and ruthless when hunting.
Their happy memory: The taste of an overly sweet dessert latte. Working in the potions classroom with Hero.
Their attempt: Archie experiments a lot with how to go about the casting and cycles through dozens of memories. Even if he manages to succeed, he'll probably keep trying different things to see what does and doesn't work.

Quentin Youngblood

Year: Sophomore
Patronus Form: Fucking Hummingbird
Why?: Hummingbirds symbolize adaptability, impulsivity and independence.
Their happy memory: That one's hard because Quentin doesn't separate life into happy or sad, so finding a happy memory at all requires him to analyze his own experiences way deeper than he does. It's the first time he set up a snare and caught a rabbit. He was six, his father gave him that 'uh huh' nod of his and then he skinned the rabbit. It was awesome.
Their attempt: As far as he knows - he can't cast a patronus, but he still goes hard in the attempt.

Chloe

Name: Chloe Shepherd
Year: Senior
Patronus Form: Hedgehog
Why?: Hedgehogs are unique, and though they may seem meek, they are are friendly, curious creatures. They are gentle yet protective of themselves. They are nocturnal, but can still be kept as pets. Folk legends often associate Hedgehogs with creativity and inventiveness. When threatened, hedgehogs curl themselves into a ball. Unlike porcupines, hedgehogs are not aggressive about using their quills, which are permanently attached to their bodies and are not barbed, and can even be pet if they aren’t frightened. Though not confrontational, and preferring to flee from a fight before it begins, this defense mechanism protects them in a big, cruel world. Hedgehogs’ quills symbolize putting space - intentional or not - between one’s self and others.
Their happy memory: Chloe tries the spell this time with memories of her endgame dreamscape
Their attempt: She's not very confident in the attempt, though she is trying harder than last year's attempt.

CASEY

Name: CASEY Patterson
Year: Senior
Patronus Form: Cockatoo.
Why?: Cockatoos are needy and don't understand that you have a life outside of them, but when content they want to cuddle all day long. They're loud when they're happy, loud when they're sad, and loud when they're bored. They're not as good at mimicking human speech as some other parrots but they are known for giving it the ol' college try. Let them up on your shoulder once and there's a good chance they're gonna think they run the place. They love to play and are mischievous, and one of their favourite activities is destroying whatever shit they can find. Inexperienced handlers may cause them to turn to aggression, screaming, and violent behaviour. Also, they love to dance.
Their happy memory: When he received the Cheer Captain badge. :x
Their attempt: Casey did not exist last year.

Iliya

Name: Iliya Krum
Year: Senior
Patronus Form: European starling
Why?: Starlings appear to be dark, plain songbirds at first glance, but have unusually complex patterning to their iridescent feathers. Mozart once had a pet starling, whom he loved deeply and praised as a clever composer. Starlings symbolise harmony in groups, learning to both assert yourself and remember sensitivity to the needs of others. Differently from Iliya, starlings are known as excellent communicators, but like Iliya, they are mimics who are attuned to people's behaviour.
Their happy memory: This is a real struggle for Iliya, for whom happy memories are always overlaid with anxiety and uncertainty. For a few days, he tries to work in watching Bulgaria win the QWC, or the first time he played the entirety of Prokofiev's Sinfonia Concertante without mistakes. But Iliya keeps returning to the memory which stayed with him most this summer, when he was debating whether or not to go back to Hogwarts. The flower field where they found Cameron, when they, Casper, Ulysses, Wilde and Mackenzie were all together, and the ferocity of Iliya's emotions in that moment, silently promising to himself that he'd never lose any of them again.
Their attempt: Iliya's not very confident about this, but he pushes himself to get extra tutoring from both Casper and Kenzie while these lessons are happening. Mostly Kenzie, because she's... you know. Nicer.

Ulysses, unfortunately

Name: Ulysses Quayle
Year: Senior
Patronus Form: An African wild dog
Why?: They're super sociable pack animals with an infamous tendency to baby their young. Ulysses lowkey thinks his patronus is some kind of hyena, which is hilarious, because hyenas are super strong and capable and like, born with their eyes open, but wild dogs basically just fuck around and eat all the best food and do no work for a full year. Anyway, they're extremely loyal and family-oriented animals; in particular, males stay home, while females form their own packs. Wild dogs are lethal hunters when they need to be, but most of their "aggression" is actually just play. In their defence, nipping their friends is fun.
Their happy memory: Last year, it was a particularly ridiculous then-EJB cabin party. This year, it's waking up from his endgame forest nap and seeing Kenzie & his boys (and knowing they cared enough to find him).
Their attempt: Ulysses feels pretty confident in his ability to cast a patronus. He's ostensibly here to set a good example as an Occlumency student, but actually, it's just because Kenzie and Casper are running it. And to support Iliya and Cameron, which he mostly does by... being a distraction. Sorry! It's how he shows he cares, unfortunately.

Spencer

Name: Spencer Sweet
Year: Junior
Patronus Form: Lammergeier, aka bearded vulture
Why?: A flashy trash bird for my flashy trash boy. Lammergeier are large vultures that look super badass, but they're actually not especially hostile. As would be expected from a vulture, they're strictly scavengers, although they mostly eat bones and marrow. That bright red color is... not natural. Like Spencer, these birds get a dye job. Lammergeier rub red dirt into their feathers to color themselves and look more intimidating. The brighter the color, the more status. They mate for life, and will sometimes settle into a polyamorous bond with two other vultures. Vultures also symbolize renewal, loyalty, tolerance, unconventionality, and imperviousness.
Their happy memory: Spencer has... a lot of memories to go through. The most likely to work is when he and Ruby took first at a junior championship.
Their attempt: It's very likely that if Spencer fails, it's because he has too many memories and ends up sitting and going through every single one of his options, frozen by indecision.

Nia!!

Name: Antonia Papadakis
Year: Senior
Patronus Form: Realizing her destiny as the world's shittiest Hera, Nia's patronus is a peacock
Why?: Big and showy and colorful and obnoxiously loud are apt descriptors for both the girl and the bird. Peacocks are associated with the Greek goddess Hera, a similarly angry broad with a big personality. Peacocks are most generally associated with sight and perception - guarding/watching/protecting and seeing from all perspectives. They are also associated with fortune, luxury, beauty and integrity.
Their happy memory: Nia struggles with this. She knows that her dream is probably the closest she'll get, but doesn't want to use that. Losing the beer pong tournament with Iliya to Riley and Cameron comes ... actually pretty close to working. She has the most luck with a memory from prom last year, laughing and talking and doing her roommates' hair before the dance.
Their attempt: She sort of goes into this assuming failure. She's never been able to cast a patronus before. So it's easier to take it in stride if she fails again.

Lachlan is pathetic

Lachlann has always struggled with Defense Against the Dark Arts. So much, in fact, that he'd had a panic attack last year while trying to prepare for the practical exam and he'd dropped the class this year for the sake of his mental and emotional well-being. So when he sees the Patronus practice session his stomach twists itself into knots.

He could try but he'd almost certainly fail, especially in an environment like this where everyone's eyes could potentially be on him in a moment if he made a mistake. Including Ms. Lilywhite's. The overachiever lingers in the doorway watching the proceedings and looking just a bit tense.

Why can't he just walk away?
