DRAMA AUDITIONS: A Midsummer Night's Dream

DRAMA AUDITIONS
Every year at Gooseberry, a performance is held right before winter break. This year, the Drama Club will be putting on Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. Inspired by the Halloween Dance, Mrs. Acuña and Ms. Thrussell explain that their plan is to use a Victorian costuming and setting theme, which they hope to be quite ambitious.

Are they in Drama Club?: Yes!
Preferred Roles: Cole will do anything and everything if he's allowed to. In the past, he's worked on sets and props and done hair and makeup. His pet project over the summer, though, was learning to sew and if he had to pick one area to focus on it'd probably be costuming. Please let him make Victorian faery gowns, Mrs. Acuña and Ms. Thrussell!!
Diego Morales
Are they in Drama Club?: Yes!
Preferred Roles: Helena, Hermia, Lysander or Demetrius. Orrrr one of the mechanicals.
Their Audition: Diego is a fairly talented actor and likes being the center of attention. On stage, he sheds a lot of the modern teen mannerisms he's picked up from his not-pureblood friends. He delivers the lines in the test read confidently with good delivery, as he clearly knows what he's saying and isn't just parroting the pretty words. However, he's notably best at either romantic or comedic fare, and doesn't have the gravitas for very dignified/powerful/mysterious roles.

Laurel
Are they in Drama Club?: Yes!
Preferred Roles: Oberon, Puck, any of the fairy servants, any of the mechanicals.
Their Audition: Laurel is a decent actor all-around, and shines in the kind of character-y roles that require a certain energy. She's very good with accents and is naturally super kinetic and physically expressive -- her acting has a kind of dance-y quality to it. In this audition it's clear that she's made an effort to memorize lines, knows the play, and is trying to put a personal spin on things. She stumbles over a line or two but doesn't show any sign that it phases her.
Rating: 8.

Are they in Drama Club?: Yes!
Preferred Roles: ...whoever is evil. She's best at being bad and tricky. So have at it.
Their Audition: Trixie is nothing but a performer. She goes out there and gives a damn good performance having actually run lines and practiced with Robin often enough and typically while making a butt ton of costumes, Trixie has this.
Rating: Everyone is saying eight, in Trixie's mind this was a totally a 10.

Pippa Nightingale
Are they in Drama Club?: No
Backstage Roles: She'll volunteer to help make costumes! Pippa enjoys sewing, and since coming to Gooseberry and taking Magical Rudiments classes she's gained confidence under Prospero's gentle encouragement. She even made her own dress for the Halloween dance! But if you need her to paint scenery or help with other jobs she'd be okay with that too!

Re: AUDITIONS: Cast & Crew
Are they in Drama Club?: Yep!
Preferred Roles: Helena, but she'd be open to any role that people think suits her.
Their Audition: It's noticeable that Tabitha performs Shakespeare in very much the more modern, natural way than the traditional, formally trained manner of old school Shakesperean actors. She has a vulnerability and gentle sadness to her acting which lends herself more to a certain type of character, and her vocal delivery is softly spoken but nonetheless clear and audible. For her audition, she uses Helena's speech from Act 1, Scene 1 - "Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind" etc, and she puts a lot of feeling into it. It clearly has quite a bit of an effect in her, though, because she has to pause for a moment a couple of times before carrying on (but hey, at least this goes with the 'natural' style she's going for? She hopes so, anyway!)
Rating: 9. She gave the performance of her life, but definitely stumbled on the odd line or two. She'll beat herself up over that, though.

Re: AUDITIONS: Cast & Crew
Are they in Drama Club?: Nah
Backstage Roles: Set design, costume design, design design.
Re: AUDITIONS: Cast & Crew
Are they in Drama Club?: Yep!
Preferred Roles: As she's still a sophomore, she knows her chances are not high of getting cast even in a smaller part, but she'd happily go for anything if cast. She would also enjoy helping out in costuming and make up if not cast, and would really enjoy that :)
Their Audition: Joanna uses a comedic section of the play for her audition, and has decent timing. She knows her lines well but kept her piece short to keep her confidence up and so she didn't start flagging. She definitely isn't the most natural performer, but makes up for the lack of skill with concentration and effort. Joanna also gives pretty good facial expressions with her comic delivery.
Rating: A harsh judge might say 6, a relaxed one a 7.
Re: AUDITIONS: Cast & Crew
Are they in Drama Club?: No, but being a fairy sounds amazing.
Preferred Roles: Any of the fairy servants. Have I mentioned that Gabi really wants to play a fairy? Because she does.
Their Audition: Gabi was very enthusiastic and has a certain amount of natural charisma due to that sunny nature of hers, and despite not being in Drama Club, she IS in LARP, which gives her...something a little bit like acting experience. She's also naturally very graceful and is nice to watch. That being said, English is not her first language and she stumbles over a line or two despite having worked hard to memorize them, and it's clear that some of Shakespeare's language is completely lost on her. Nonspeaking or small parts would very obviously suit her best. WHICH IS FINE BECAUSE SHE JUST WANTS TO BE A FAIRY Y'ALL.
Rating: 5, maybe 6 if we're being generous with test lines. 8 for energy, enthusiasm, and adorableness, though!
Kurt Wolfhart
Are they in Drama Club?: YES!
Preferred Roles: I don't have any preferred roles! Kurt would try to aim high with Lysander or Demetrius, knowing that seniors are probably more likely to get the roles, anyway.
Their Audition: Kurt’s audition starts off with an uncomfortable “Hi, um, hi... I’m K-kurt Wolfhart.” accompanied by an awkward wave. Which, of course, the professors already knew. He feels pretty dumb.
As soon as the acting portion begins, though, Kurt’s audition goes extremely well — after all, his theatrical talent was how he was accepted to Gooseberry in the first place. He worked hard to remember the lines, usually by reciting them to Lacey (his favourite horse in the Stables), and even blocked out a large part of the movement. During his time on stage Kurt is a completely different person to those who haven’t seen him in Drama or Equestrian before. He’s confident, the stutter is gone, and he looks like he’s genuinely enjoying himself.
Rating: 9. WHY DID YOU HAVE TO BE SO LAME, INTRODUCTION??

Re: AUDITIONS: Cast & Crew
Are they in Drama Club?: Yep!
Preferred Roles: Puck, hippolyta, Titania (uh literally the only familiarity I have with this play is that ben foster musical)
Their Audition: Olivia is actually a great performer. She gets into roles easily, she can remember and recite Shakespeare with actual personality and knows when to insert sarcasm, or when to use facial reactions. She clearly prepared.
Rating: A solid nine
Re: AUDITIONS: Cast & Crew
Are they in Drama Club?: Yep!
Preferred Roles: I have no preference .
Their Audition: There was some struggle. Solomon is great at memorizing and learning new things but he's awful at Shakespeare. So there was stumbling over wording, and then that unfortunate part where he accidentally recited several lines in Spanish because Shakespeare barely even wrote in English.
Rating: Definitely a four. Ten for effort and enthusiasm tho.
Sun-mi
Are they in Drama Club?: Yep!
Preferred Roles: No real preference, though she's trained to play drama and romance moreso than comedy. (I AM NOT FAMILIAR WITH THE ROLES. PICK ONE FOR ME, RAVI.
it's very possible she literally said this.)Their Audition: Sun-mi is unquestionably a performer, though she shines most at movement and non-verbal communication. Her reading is definitely weaker than some of the other students, but it's still more than adequete.
Rating: IDK, maybe like a 7/8 whole package?

Are they in Drama Club?: Yes
Preferred Roles: Hermia, Titania (though she sincerely doubts this is viable, a girl can dream!) any fairy. Though really she'll play anything.
Their Audition: Susana delivers her performance with an ease that speaks of natural talent, though she is young and definitely still learning. She's not a shy girl by any means, and has no problems conveying emotion in a setting she seems "safe". Given how intense and passionate she is in life, portraying a woman desperately in love is not so hard, and she completely immerses herself in the idea of wanting someone so bad it consumes her (overdramaic teenager much?!)
Rating: i hate this! Lol About a 7.5? Maybe?!

Are they in Drama Club?: Nope. She just likes this play.
Backstage Roles: Z doesn't have a whole lot of spare time, but she's interested in helping to paint set stuff/make things look nice.

Are they in Drama Club?: NO. She actually specifically avoided joining since both Diego and Mina are in it and that is TOO MUCH. But they're getting along right now, SO.
Backstage Roles: Lighting, set design, tinker toys, whatever.
Riley Stamper
Are they in Drama Club?: YES!!
Preferred Roles: Riley would PREFER something BIG and IMPORTANT, like Titania!! Or Puck!! Or Hippolyta!! But no really just one of the fairies.
Their Audition: So, Riley tried to run lines with Katya, but they ended up just doing each other's nails instead. Shakespeare is clunky to read, so she's not as good as some of these other pros, damn guys, but she has no inhibitions on stage and throws absolutely everything into the performance. She might not get the lines 100% right, but she says them with FEELING and she makes her presence KNOWN.
Rating: Considering she's in drama club and should be AWESOME AT THIS YOU GUYS it's really more of a 6, but I'll be generous to her and say 7.
Harriet Cohen
Are they in Drama Club?: Yep!
Preferred Roles: In order of desire: 1. Puck 2. Oberon 3. Demetrius 4. Lysander 5. Nick Bottom
Their Audition: Harriet was pleased that one of Shakespeare's more rhyme-y plays was chosen, as she find the rhythm of those easier to catch and memorize. She gave a lively performance with good rhythmic timing and excellent projection and enunciation.
Rating: 9
Levi Kramer; Stage Crew
Are they in Drama Club?: Yes!
Backstage Roles: Music! He wants to play the piano and he'd audition with Yiruma's Moonlight from memory. (GOTTA KEEP UP WITH THE SPACE THEME. The moon is in space. Moonlight.)
Re: AUDITIONS: Cast & Crew
Are they in Drama Club?: YES
Preferred Roles: PUCK preferably. Any main character will do, though, he will respect Ms. Thrussell's expertise.
Their Audition: When Cameron takes the stage, he's got something under a red cloth, and anyone who knows him knows something is up. With a flourish, he pulls off the cloth to reveal... a unicycle. He then proceeds to recite Puck's lines while cycling around the stage and gesticulating. He messes up a few lines, though whether it's because he forgot or because he's splitting his attention is hard to say. At the end, he takes a bow, and forgetting the physics of unicycles, face plants. It was plainly not on purpose, but he tries to act like it was.
Rating: 8 for line reading + 1 for dramatics - 1 for stupidity, 8 total.

Are they in Drama Club?: Nope
Backstage Roles: She'd like to help with the crafty stuff. Set design, definitely. Possibly costume too, if it's needed
Wilhelmina Tran
Are they in Drama Club?: Y
Preferred Roles: She wants one of the starring roles, so she's going to read for Helena. This is a miscalculation.
Their Audition: Mina is well-prepared, she's memorized her monologue and reads her lines without stumbling, but the language of Shakespeare isn't totally natural to her and she's more focused on getting the words out than putting feeling into them. Or rather, her problem is that she puts too much feeling into it, i.e. overacting. Mina isn't really capable of playing anyone other than herself (loud, bossy, uncompromising) and the tone's a bit off for a vulnerable, heartbroken character.
Rating: idk 6-7

Despite what the popcorn may imply she's actually way into supporting her little fledgling actors. She'll clap after each audition, clap enthusiastically after each Azurcrest's audition, and WHOOP for the ones she finds particularly entertaining. Every reaction is good-natured but she promises to shut up if Acuña or Thrussell tell her that's quite enough.
