THE HALLOWEEN DANCE

The sun begins to set just at 6:30, so by the time everyone's heading to the Lodge for the dance, the atmosphere is perfect. Mr. Covington (assisted by... Mr. Elmasry?) has lined the main trails with lit jack-o'-lanterns.

The Lodge's lights have all be tinted orange, purple and green, and a red carpet welcomes students into the building. Just inside, there's a podium where Mr. Hightower directs most students to proceed straight into the atrium. Those students who earned the VIP treatment, however, are sent upstairs so that they can descend via the stairs to an announcement and generous confetti. Ennis Harper trips and falls, but luckily is caught by Eve very romantically, earning applause.

The dance begins with a Choir performance, which caps off with Grace Sowerberry's solo to "Spooky". Casey Patterson and [Dance Character D] do an improvised dance to the the number that has everyone stopping and staring. But now that the dance is underway, everyone can help themselves to partying, treats, and spooks!

Riley Stamper knows better than to spike the punch after last year, but still packs a flask to get pleasantly tipsy. Hazel Keating, [Character G] and [Character H] also indulge from that flask, but only [Character H] is caught. Oops, that's a -15 points from their house, and they're sent to see a less than pleased Healer Mufferaw. He sobers [Character H] up, but gives them detention for their trouble.

In the vampire-themed area of the cafeteria, Milo Greer & Bianca Dubois gets the bright idea to hide in one of the plywood caskets to make out, safe from bad jump scares. Meanwhile, Ariadne Flint and Jade Otterwell successfully sneak into the VIP area by pretending to be a auction couple while the freshman bouncer is distracted.

HOW THIS WORKS

• The dance begins at 7:00 PM, and ends at 11:00 PM. Staff will escort students back to their cabins at the end of the dance.


• The lodge will be cleared at 2 PM so Event Committee can prepare for the dance. As per Ursula de Luca's request, Event Committee may store their supplies in a second floor classroom instead of the basement until the Molly situation is resolved. It's not as conveniently located, but nor is it haunted!


• Dinner will take place at individual campgrounds with hot dogs and burgers cooked over the campfire. Vegetarian and vegan options will be available.


• Once the dance begins, choir will be performing a set of Halloween-themed songs selected by Tally Prince.


• There is a MACUSA presence, but staff will tell students not to bother the agents unless it's an emergency.


• Dress Code & Rules: Chests and stomachs must be covered, and shorts and skirts must reach three inches below the fingertips. (Teachers may go easy on skirt lengths, but keep your booties covered, kids.) No real weapons are allowed, but toys will be approved by teachers. Nothing that can shoot anything, be it darts, water or magic, will be permitted. No aggressive magic is allowed at the dance.


• During the dance, only the following areas are open in the lodge: the Atrium (main dance area), the cafeteria (which has been transformed into a maze), the hallway to the restrooms (east of the Atrium), the public restrooms, the hallway to the infirmary and classrooms (west of the Atrium), and the infirmary (emergencies only).


• Anon and Brother will not be in attendance, as Brother shared with staff the spell to magically bar them from buildings.


• VIP AUCTION COUPLES: The VIP couples (listed below) have access to the exclusive balcony area, and are asked to arrive together. As the pairs walk into the atrium, their names are loudly announced in a spoooooky Crypt Keeper sort of voice, and balloons pop overhead showering them in pumpkin and skull shaped glitter.

SCARE ZONES

• Instead of a single haunted house, Micah St. Clair has led the creation of several themed “scare zones” in areas surrounding the dance. Costumed freshmen (and some other Event Committee volunteers) have been tasked with scaring anyone who passes through the area.


• Many of these areas are inconveniently situated, so students who need to go to the restroom or want to sneak off to make out may end up being unpleasantly interrupted!


• Please Note: the freshmen are not allowed to grab anyone or cast spells in the scare zones, and participants are expected to follow the same rules.


• If we read your character threatening violence if someone scares them, we probably won't give you a scare. This is just to preserve the mood of the dance, and stop it from being derailed by a fight.


• Event Committee characters may join in on scaring people, so you can play and arrange your own scares if you like. Just follow the same rules: no touching, no spells, no fighting.

» BEFORE THE DANCE: Event Committee gets the dance ready and everyone hurries to make sure their costumes are perfect.

» BEGINNING OF THE DANCE: The hallway leading into the atrium is decorated like the backstage of a movie set, with sheets hanging from the walls to disguise the log cabin interior. Walking out into the atrium reveals the main dance floor and the stage where Choir performs a set of spooky songs!

» THE ATRIUM: Bright, colorful and fun, the dance floor is styled to look like a Monster Mash movie party. The walls are plastered in classic horror movie posters, and there are two popcorn machines to drive home the old Hollywood feel. Above the dancers are green, purple, orange and black balloons that are suspended in mid-air, lighting up the dance floor with a multicolor glow. There's also a snacks table, that features Halloween themed snacks and punch.



» Dr. FrankenReece's Laboratory: Come trick-or-treat in Dr. FrankenReece's Laboratory! Inside, there are three doors. Behind one hides a candy prize, but behind the other two lurk danger. After you make your selection, Dr. FrankenReece opens one of the other two doors to reveal... Count Zachula! He has the spookiest tricks of all: probability and statistics. To those that will listen, Reece and Zach enthusiastically explain the mathematics behind the Monty Hall Problem. But even if you won't hear them out, you still get a choice: stick with your original door, or switch to the third door?<b>Name:</b> <b>Switch or Stay?:</b> Did they switch or stay with their original door? <b>Anything else?:</b>

» VIP AREA: THE BALCONY: Possibly the only peaceful spot at the dance. The balcony has wrought iron tables and chairs that boast jack 'o lantern table settings with name cards reserving seats for VIP couples. The outdoor seating is kept warm with magic, and freshmen run from table to table taking orders and delivering treats and punch to the VIPs. No need to stand in line here! The mood is decidedly romantic, with only candles to serve as lighting. The VIP couples are:

» SCARE ZONE: DOCKS: Immediately outside the lodge, a thick fog blankets the area, almost impossible to navigate except for the magical lanterns bobbing in the mist, leading the way to and out of the dance. But be careful! Terrible amphibious creatures have emerged from the lake, and they have a taste for human flesh! (Creature from the Black Lagoon)

» SCARE ZONE: HALLWAY TO RESTROOMS: Through the low light, you glimpse a forgotten Egyptian tomb. Lockers have been papered over with hieroglyph designs, and skeletal statues stand guard along the walls. Wait—that golden sarcophagus at the end of the hall, right beside the entrance to the restrooms… is it opening? (The Mummy)

» SCARE ZONE: HALLWAY TO CLASSROOMS: A mad genius has taken over this area with ungodly contraptions. Thick black wires spread over the walls and ceiling, and dangerous electric bolts jump between exposed pieces of machinery. In the middle of the hallway is an infirmary bed covered with a bloodstained sheet… and something’s twitching underneath. (Frankenstein)

» SCARE ZONE: CAFETERIA: When you step inside, all colour drains from the room. A charm transforms your vision to mimic grainy black-and-white film. A winding, fake-cobweb-filled maze covers the whole cafeteria, and monstrous creatures prowl, looking for victims. The theme is apparently “every idea we couldn’t fit somewhere else.”

• The Day the Earth Stood Still/Invasion of the Body Snatchers. The crowning jewel of the maze is a large wooden UFO that has "crashed" in the middle of the maze. Here, the freshmen are dressed up as aliens that pop out from behind fake bushes. The lighting is eerie and green, and there are magical mirrors framed by fake trees that give the impression that you have a doppleganger following you around. The charm slows down your reflection so it doesn't quite move in time with you.


• Night of the Living Dead. Freshmen zombies shamble around a wrecked section of the maze, where a mural of a city on fire and siren lights portrays the apocalypse. The little ankle biters aren't terribly scary, but they will chase you around!


• Nosferatu/Dracula. A corner of the cafeteria is made to look a little like a castle basement, with plywood coffins and caskets littered about. It's fairly quiet over here, with moody lighting coming from torches. Little fake bats flutter around overhead.

» AFTER THE DANCE: It's 11:00 and the dance winds down, and everyone hikes back to their campgrounds. Is there anything else your characters get up to in the late evening or early morning?

For all she goes on about how much she hates her new step-father, she sure does love it when he buys her expensive things.

Charlotte is pleased as can be with her Super Sailor Moon cosplay. While the other girls are getting dressed, she prances around the room, swinging her Moon Kaleidoscope around, and shouting out attacks.

"MOOOON... GOOORRGEEOUUUSSS... MEEEEEE-DITATION!!!"

Anyone feeling nostalgic for having orders barked at them during dance preparation doesn't have to wait long because Ursula is clearly channeling the spirit of her predecessor this afternoon. This is it, the first big dance of the year and everything needs to be perfect. As she moves around the lodge, it's hard to say if her face will ever recover from its sour expression.

A little more to the left. No, not that left.

Did she say double the balloons from last year? Clearly she meant triple them.

Phew, okay, by the end of dance preparation Ursula's blood pressure seems to be back at a manageable level. At least it is until she starts imagining what kind of havoc the freshmen may be wreaking on the lodge while she's away.

As she inspects her makeup in the mirror one final time, she thinks she spots a wrinkle. Everyone knows the cost of leadership takes a strong toll on the body and— oh, wait, no. That's just an eyelash. Crisis averted.

Unlike prom, Ursula isn't taking up half the cabin space with her dress tonight, having instead opted for a classic monster mash-up outfit that fits the dance's theme as well as her VIP status.

She's been working very hard to play things cool since the date auction, but there's maybe a little giddy flipflop in her stomach when she lets her thoughts drift away from planning the perfect party and instead to her own evening's plans. Those thoughts are quickly scattered away with a flick of her black evening glove adorned wrists — they're both far too busy for silly distractions — and she turns her attention instead to her cabinmates. "First dance of the year, but last Halloween dance together. Mind posing for a group photo?" Ursula's not nearly as attached to her electronics as some of the kids at school, but she does keep a cellphone charged for the all-important selfie.

Jr Copperboys

As Ira's costume consists entirely of khakis, a sweater, and a stapler, he has plenty of time to sit on his bunk, curtains open, safely away from the chaos of whatever the hell his roommates are doing below him. He's a corporate zombie, if anyone's asking, which he assumes no one is. He made sure to get very little sleep the night before so he looks appropriately wan and disheveled. (Who says he isn't committing to a costume?)

He feels like he should be studying in the meantime, this is taking everyone else so long. "Are you done yet?" He asks for at least the third time to the room at large, snapping his stapler a few times to get his roommates to hurry, which is probably something he'll be doing all night if someone doesn't break the stupid thing.

Junior Ribbonboys

Overall, Calvin's costume hadn't taken much effort. His outfits rarely do, although the amount of time spent on his hair has increased dramatically from last year. Tonight it's particularly noticeable. He has a date who (almost) explicitly expressed (or at least didn't deny) interest in... nevermind, no need to think about that right now. At the moment, his mask is pushed up into his hair, hopefully not ruining it.

Doubtlessly, Cole and Ramon are going to need the most time preparing. Last year, Cole's costume had been so elaborate he could barely get around. "We walkin' down together? I shoulda found out if I'm supposed t'pick up Todd, or is he comin' to Ribbonfin." Calvin pretends to clean up his corner of the room to disguise his pacing. "All a'you have your dates right 'ere."

Halloween is the best. Samantha is very excited for a chance to have a little party and let loose. She'd been wound so tightly lately, and it wasn't like her at all. Knowing she might be getting some help from the new school counselor and being able to have a fun night with Solo and everyone else. This is decidedly a welcome distraction from everything else going on.

Solo and Sam decided to dress up as Finn the Human and Jake the Dog from Adventure Time. They'd binged watched the muggle show over summer and thought it would be fun. Sam even charmed her hair blonde to match the character, and had her sword made by Reece. It came together pretty awesomely.

She's tucking her hair into the hat, fumbling with bobby pins to keep it where it should be before letting out a half-sigh and turning to her roommates. "Can someone help me with this?"

Senior Ebonboys + Anyone else who wants idk

"It washes me out," Cameron says, examining his reflection in the mirror. Dark brown hair hangs into his eyes, and he gives a habitual shake to toss it to the side. Even though the character he's supposed to be (Tuxedo Man?) has black hair, he couldn't quite commit to the look. At least the tuxedo and the cape are cool, though he can't pass through doorways with the hat on.

"Alright, who needs last minute help? Costumes? Hair? Makeup?" At the last item on the list, he looks around the room for Casper. Don't think he's forgotten you!

Love's a funny thing, isn't it? Oscar has only a vague idea of who he is supposed to be. All he knows is Vee has him dressing up like some guy named Hunter Huntsman from some doll show Vee insisted they watch over summer. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't his thing. He did kind of dig the costume though, which definitely came with a fake but good looking bow and arrow. He's staring at himself in the mirror wondering like how much of a prat he looks like, and eventually addresses the question to the room.

"Okay, how much of a prat do I look like?"

Small Bear Invades Junior Bird Territory

Hanging out in the Azurcrest cabin is kind of like hanging out in the upstairs hallway of his house near the only bathroom with a decent mirror at 6:30 am on a school day. There are a lot of people and the people are both poor at volume control and shuffling around each other like they're in the middle of an expertly choreographed dance number. And today it even involves liberal application of makeup.

So the deja vu's a bit strong from where Bash has dropped himself (reasonably decked out as Eddie Munster and unnecessarily ray-gunned) onto Lucas' desk chair, one leg bouncing and the other tucked up under him and out of the way of moving birds.

Tris & Issy WAY Before the dance - Early AM

Isabelle and Tristan have a job to do. Late on deciding Halloween costumes, the two decide to go in theme as Anne of Green Gables and Marilla Cuthbert, same show, respectively. However, the lack of time they gave themselves meant the two were in a bind. They had to find costume pieces and quick. Isabelle could pull off most of hers without help - she had a straw had that would work fine, ribbons for her hair and she owned a pair of boots that would work as well. It was the old timey dress that was the issue. She had nothing that would work well enough to really pass.

Tristan on the other hand, didn't have anything he needed. Isabelle was not usually one to get in trouble or do something likely against the rules like... borrowing outfits from the drama room without authorization but there really hadn't been much time and there was a small, very small part of her, that wanted to make this Anne of Green Gables costume rock just to spite Ari for being the one to suggest it. She had no reason to believe Ari was being rude at the time, but she felt it might have been mean spirited. Either way, once Tris took the idea and ran with it she was all for going as Anne.

Early in the morning of the dance, Isabelle does her best to leave the cabin early without waking anyone. She doesn't think any of her roommates would care if she did disappear or even notice it, but she leaves a note for Jo saying she went for an early run with Tristan and she was fine, just so her Prefect roommate wouldn't panic upon waking up. She doesn't go all the way to Ribbonfin, but meets Tristan by the gardens before the head up to the main lodge to raid the drama room.

"Don't take too much, because they'll be bound to notice and I don't want to get thrown out for this." She replied. Although she often thought of leaving the school, she didn't want to be kicked out of it. With Tristan here, particularly. "You go through the costumes. I'll get the make-up we need for making you look old and use what make-up I have to do the rest. Sound like a plan?"

London + Quentin

"Alright!" London says cheerfully, holding up the two headbands she got from the Halloween tree, "I've got the pieces duh resistance right here!" London is already dressed, made up, and ready to go.

Ennis wasted too much time starting, scrapping, and switching costume projects. In the final week before the dance, he decided to spend that time making costumes for dead kids instead. So instead of a new costume like he'd planned, he ends up back where he started at the auction: a satyr. Or, well, a faun now that he's changed to a softer makeup style.

Ennis has been ready for a long while, vastly overestimating the time it would take to put on his costume, makeup, and wig and he's been twiddling his thumbs since the end of Event Committee's setup.

"Do you need any help?" is what he keeps asking his roommates as he tries to find something to do to kill the time.

Riley wrinkles her nose at the green shorts tossed over the back of the couch. She doesn't want to look appropriate, she wants to look cute. She's Tinkerbell and Tinkerbell is supposed to be cute. And also hot.

How is this happening to her? How is this, right now, her life? Hazel had told Fern she'd take her now-no-longer-needed auction date off her hands without even thinking about who it would be and... here she is. At the Halloween dance with Casey Patterson, current bane of her existence. Upon realizing her horrible mistake she'd considered backing out, but that just felt too much like letting the other Coppertale win for it to be a viable option.

Dear god does she need a drink.

Glowering across one of the tables at Casey, Hazel makes one little attempt at smiling. It's the least sincere expression her face has ever made. "At least there's food."

The more things change, the more they stay the same. As soon as Calvin doesn't have a date to entertain, he transforms back into a wallflower. All he needs is a bit of fresh air to settle himself again. A moment of privacy in which he can safely worry about whether or not Todd is enjoying himself, or if he would have preferred the company of literally anyone else in school. Well, almost anyone else. Ramon and Micah very likely still ranked lower than Calvin.

Calvin slips outside into the relative quiet of the docks, just beyond the doors. He hopes the freshmen know better than to bother him, but he's not paying them much mind either way. The chill encourages him to pull his cape around him and ball his hands in it to cover the bare skin. He should have worn gloves.

The second Jade caught wind of scare zones, she made it her life's goal and mission to hit every single one of them. She eyes the mummy at the end of the hall like a challenge. Barely holding back a grin, she keeps her back to the wall, sidling along it while tapping her toy blaster against her hand. Even if there's actually no one to witness this, it's important to never break character, and she's into being a daring space rogue this evening. "Aren't you a little wrapped up to come out here?" She quips, voice low.

Then she pauses, winces. Okay. So maybe Han Solo wouldn't do puns. Her witty banter needs a little work.

Even though Hazel is making a point to spend time with her unfortunate date, that doesn't mean she's going to make herself spend her entire night with him. She wants to have fun, so exploring the scarier parts of the dance alone is just what she's looking for. After all, she figures there's no way she'd enjoy this sort of thing with Casey around. How much would he be posturing about not being scared? Way too much, probably. The buzz from Riley's contraband has undercut her desire to deal with that even more than usual.

For the briefest of moments she'd considered going down to the docks, but she had no desire to tempt fate and scare herself that much. Mad scientists seemed harmless enough. Hazel's about to start in alone, but... she glances around to see if there's a familiar face willing to brave the hallway with her. Just in case.

Chloe has to see the space ship. She loves horror, but she's the type of fan who easily succumbs to the atmosphere and tosses her popcorn in the air halfway through the movie. The decorations are so impressive, but there's no way she's going in there alone. "Ready?" she asks, bouncing on her heels
